You are sweet enough
On 4th May 2021, we were delighted to have been invited to deliver a presentation at the Verchilds High School as part of their health and wellness week. The theme for the week was ‘Hope, Resilience and a Healthy You!”and paying attention to the ‘healthy you’ part of the theme, our 40-minute session focused on healthy drinking and enabled us to share our ‘You’re Sweet Enough’ message with first formers.
Our Advocacy Officer, Isalean Phillip, delivered a very interactive session on the harms of sugar-sweetened beverages. In her presentation, Ms Phillip demonstrated how much sugar is in a typical sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) and discussed the link between the overconsumption of SSBs and weight gain, obesity and the development of non-communicable diseases. To clearly communicate these messages, we used some of our campaign material including our two animations – The Dangers of Sweet Drinks and Addicted to Me Sweetness. Both of these were well-received by students with students even asking that we play Addicted to Me Sweetness again!
Ms Phillip ended the session by teaching students our jingle and having a sing-off between three groups of first formers (they did a great job!), and she left them with a challenge: to drink more water and fewer sweet drinks
We had a lot of fun at Verchilds High School and really appreciated student’s enthusiasm as they learnt an important health message.
We would like to thank the staff for their invitation to participate in their health and wellness week and look forward to seeing their students take on the challenge of reducing their SSB intake.
