You are sweet enough
We recently had the privilege of meeting with the Attorney General, Hon. Garth Wilkin, to discuss crucial policies and legislation aimed at preventing and controlling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in St. Kitts and Nevis. This meeting was a significant step in our ongoing commitment to improving the health of our nation.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Hon. Wilkin for his warm welcome and unwavering commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of our citizens. His dedication to this cause is truly commendable and inspiring.
We are also thrilled to shine a spotlight on our dedicated Youth Health Advocates, Fiona Zhang, Genesia Pemberton, and Shyra Wattley, who played a pivotal role in this meeting. Their hard work and unwavering commitment have been instrumental in our advocacy efforts to create a healthier nation. Notably, these youth advocates ensure that the perspective of our young citizens is not only considered but also valued in the discussions surrounding NCD prevention and control.
A big thank you goes out to our exceptional Advocacy Officer, Michele Baker, for her tireless efforts in driving our mission forward. Her passion and dedication are the driving forces behind our continued progress.
One of the key discussions during this meeting centred on the introduction of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage (SSB) taxation legislation. This initiative holds immense importance in our mission to combat NCDs for several reasons:
1. Reducing Consumption: SSBs are a significant contributor to the rising prevalence of NCDs due to their high sugar content. Introducing taxation encourages reduced consumption, thereby mitigating the risk factors associated with NCDs.
2. Generating Revenue: Taxation of SSBs can generate revenue that can be reinvested into public health initiatives, including awareness campaigns, healthier school environments, and improving our healthcare infrastructure.
3. Promoting Healthy Alternatives: SSB taxation prompts consumers to opt for healthier beverage alternatives, ultimately leading to improved dietary choices and better health outcomes.
With the Attorney General’s support and the dedication of our Youth Health Advocates and Advocacy Officer, we are making substantial strides toward a healthier St. Kitts and Nevis. Our commitment to these vital discussions and policies is unwavering, and we look forward to continued progress in our mission to create a healthier and more vibrant nation.
