You are sweet enough

Healthy Food Policy Reel Series: Episode 1

Why Do We Need Healthy Food Policies?
Today, with the launch of our new video miniseries, we will focus on the role health policies can play in reducing the consumption of SSBs and protecting the long-term health of our people.

NCDs are the leading cause of death and illness in St. Kitts and Nevis. In addition, the Federation has some of the highest rates of type 2 diabetes in the region. One contributing factor in the development of NCDs is the overconsumption of unhealthy foods and beverages. There are, however, a variety of health policies that can help prevent much of this!

One such policy is Front Of Package Warning Labeling, which displays octagonal warnings on the fronts of products high in unhealthy substances like sugar, sodium, and fat, so consumers know which products are unhealthy immediately.

Furthermore, a tax on SSBs could reduce the purchase and consumption of SSBs, improving overall health. The restriction of the marketing of SSBs to young children can be a significant step towards reducing overweight and obesity among children in the region. In addition, it can prevent them from adopting unhealthy long-term eating habits.

Throughout the world, and even in the region, such as Barbados, Grenada, and Bermuda, similar policies have been implemented. We think it’s time St. Kitts and Nevis made a change too!

We look forward to helping you make the right choices for your long-term health with the You’re Sweet Enough campaign.
